When former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified before the House of Representatives’s Jan. 6 select committee in June 2022, she shared a fantastically unbelievable story. Now, nearly two years later, we have firsthand evidence contradicting her.
According to Hutchinson, she was told that after delivering his speech at the Ellipse on Jan. 6, 2021, then-President Donald Trump wanted to accompany the crowd on their march to the Capitol. The Secret Service did not permit this to happen, and, in a fit of rage, Trump allegedly lunged for the steering wheel and tried to take control of the presidential limo.
It was a ludicrous story that strained credibility from the moment it was uttered, especially given Hutchinson’s own history of flip-flopping before her made-for-TV testimony. So it was no surprise that in November 2022, the Secret Service driver of the presidential limo testified to the committee behind closed doors that it never happened.
But it was not until Monday that the transcript of the driver’s testimony was made public. Meanwhile, Hutchinson has gone on to publish a book and become a regular on the MSNBC and CNN talking head circuit.
“[Trump] never grabbed the steering wheel. I didn’t see him, you know, lunge to try to get into the front seat at all,” the driver told the committee more than a year ago.
Of course, Hutchinson’s absurdity was plain to see from the beginning. As she herself noted, she was not in the car when the supposed incident took place and had no firsthand knowledge of the president’s actions, only hearsay. But her tall tale offered her the first opportunity to transform from lowly White House aide to celebrity grifter.

Months before she testified, Hutchinson was trying to get a conservative organization aligned with Trump to help her with her legal bills. But then she abruptly flipped and suddenly decided that the Jan. 6 committee was no longer “BS” and would testify in prime time.
But it’s hard to blame her. After all, she made out like a bandit, and I’m sure she’s enjoying her newfound wealth and prestige in the left-wing media.
