Despite falling behind former President Donald Trump in every major national election poll, President Joe Biden has either knowingly lied or outright deluded himself into believing that he is beating the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
However bad Biden’s apparent senility seems to the public, the president is evidently less sanguine about the dire state of his reelection odds in private. According to Axios, Biden is “privately pushing for a much more aggressive approach to 2024: Go for Donald Trump’s jugular.”
Because Biden cannot run on his economic performance, which includes an 18% increase in overall prices and a 5% real loss in the average paycheck, Biden reportedly wants to bank on rattling Trump instead.
“Biden has told friends he thinks Trump is wobbly, both intellectually and emotionally, and will explode if Biden mercifully gigs and goads him — ‘go haywire in public,’ as one adviser put it,” Axios reports.
Maybe Trump, who at 77 years old to Biden’s 81, is also “wobbly.” But the real problem with Biden’s strategy is that neither he nor his party predecessors have provided him much more room to escalate his attempts to “go for the jugular.”
In the last three months alone, Biden has accused Trump of “embrac[ing] political violence” as well as “his old pal Putin,” echoing the Obama deep state’s prolonged and fact-free smear campaign that Trump colluded with the Kremlin to the win the 2016 election. Contrary to the unanimous conclusion by the Supreme Court, Biden said it is “self-evident” that Trump is an insurrectionist, a term historically reserved for Civil War traitors. And by backing Colorado’s attempt to disenfranchise nearly half its voters by taking Trump off the 2024 ballot, recall that Biden is backing an argument that Trump committed not just an insurrection but also by extension (according to some interpretations) treason, a crime punishable by execution.

How much more vicious an attack could anyone possibly levy than conflating Trump with Confederates who committed treason? What about insinuating that Trump committed actual treason by colluding with the Russians and promulgating the since-debunked Russiagate conspiracy theory? There’s not much more ruthless an accusation Biden has left to levy against Trump short of outright rape or murder, and the progressive legal movement has already taken Trump to court over a nearly 40-year-old allegation of the former.
Having learned nothing from how, after smearing Mitt Romney as a virulent sexist and a tax cheat, the Democratic Party wound up losing to Donald Trump, of all candidates, in 2016. Biden seems keen to make the same mistake again and up the ante of his attacks. The only problem is that he has nowhere left to go.
