Most of the public has a relatively favorable view of marijuana. Admitting this fact is neither shocking nor groundbreaking. There’s been a decadeslong effort to popularize the drug that has been an integral part of the pro-marijuana campaign. Much of the country has been programmed to believe there are little, if any, dangers associated with using marijuana, so much so that many would scoff at the mere suggestion of marijuana being even remotely dangerous. It’s indicative of the overall effectiveness of the decadeslong propaganda campaign to promote marijuana to the public positively.
Yet, in doing so, they are leaving the population extremely vulnerable to marijuana’s dangers and creating a false sense of security about the drug. Reports of the negative ramifications that come with using the drug are either swept under the rug or, in most cases, just outright ignored. Such was the case of the most recent study involving marijuana, which linked the frequent and regular use of marijuana to the significant increase in a “person’s risk for heart attack and stroke.” It’s the latest blunt warning, pun intended, urging people to take the dangers associated with recreational use more seriously.
However, many of the nation’s politicians are making this exceedingly difficult. This is especially problematic given the various reports in recent weeks suggesting that some of the nation’s top legislators were advocating yet another push to legalize marijuana. For example, in February, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and discussed making marijuana legal. After explaining how and why the drug should be rescheduled, she called for marijuana to be legalized.
“Let’s make marijuana legal,” the famous Native American descendant told Colbert. “It shouldn’t be that hard.”
Warren’s response is ignorant, sad, but, quite frankly, predictable. Many senators share her nonchalant attitude toward marijuana. Yet they are becoming accomplices to arguably one of this country’s greatest poisonings. Politicians such as Warren, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), among others, have all engaged in positive messaging surrounding marijuana and supported its legalization. They make no mention of the numerous recent studies, just in the last year alone, that have warned of marijuana’s dangers. They have decided not to “trust the science.”
Consider the revelations of the most recent study mentioned above. Published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the study found that the regular use of marijuana was “associated with a 25% increased likelihood of heart attack and a 42% increased likelihood of stroke when compared to non-use of the drug.” The observational study used data from approximately 435,000 American adults, read a release from the National Institutes of Health, and was “among the largest ever to explore the relationship between cannabis and cardiovascular events.”

Politicians want to legalize a product that will help people die. They are pushing to make a drug more easily accessible to the public that increases their likelihood of experiencing unnecessary pain and suffering. Politicians are actively working to help the public access a drug that science has shown will cause them harm. The government’s communication surrounding drug use has regressed from the positive and effective mantra of “just say no” to the harrowing and devastating messaging of “if he dies, he dies.”
The public deserves better. They deserve politicians who want to help their citizens live long, prosperous lives, not politicians who diligently work to bring impending cardiovascular doom and destruction to the men and women of their country.
