‘A.A.P.I.’ and ‘Latinx’ just aren’t welcome in our ‘master bedrooms’

The woke attempt to revamp the English language isn’t going very well, thank goodness. To determine what went wrong with their linguistic project, the “wokesters” may need to have a powwow.
The New York Times ran an online poll asking if people would use various words or phrases, about half of which are traditional English idioms and the other half are the replacement terms preferred by the scolds of the politically correct Left. To the obvious and bumfuzzled consternation of many of the newspaper’s own writers, the public overwhelmingly rejects their woke obsessions.
THE WORST OF 2022: FIVE TIMES WOKENESS TOOK OVER IN MEDIA
Take the term “master bedroom.” Apparently, some group of the Perpetually Offended decided that the term should be avoided because it is a hurtful reminder of the “master-slave” relationship, even if the term’s origin had absolutely nothing to do with slavery. The poll-taking public disagree, with 84% saying they still use the phrase. Likewise, 87% still use the perfectly fine word “Hispanic,” while only 22% will ever say “Latinx.”
Despite the Left’s insistence that “woman” is now a fluid concept — remember that Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson absolutely refused to define the word — 86% of respondents are perfectly happy saying “pregnant women,” while only 34% (still far too high a number!) would ever say the intellectually inane phrase “birthing parent.” For clarity’s sake, it is similarly good news that 81% still say “Asian,” while only 27% say “A.A.P.I.” (For the blissfully and fortunately unaware, “A.A.P.I.” stands for “Asian American Pacific Islanders.”)
Perhaps the best news is that a slight majority, 52%, still use the term “illegal alien,” which is entirely accurate both by dictionary definition and by federal law, even though it gives the vapors to the Left. Online, New York Times Opinion graphic editor Quoctrung Bui was aghast that a full decade of concerted Leftist effort on this front has failed to properly instruct the masses. He wrote: “’Illegal alien’ was another curveball in the survey, at least for me. I thought most people had stopped using this term. Our style guide here at The Times changed its approach in 2013.”
Oh my gosh, if the style guide lays down the law, how dare we plebeians question it? That must make us guilty of the worst sort of lese-majeste!

Still, the language police have had their triumphs. Only 34% of Americans, according to the poll, believe it is acceptable to use the word “powwow,” presumably because it offends Indians. Or Native Americans, or whatever.
To people of goodwill, though, the idea of a friendly discussion or celebration should be seen as a reason for pride, not offense. The world needs more powwows, not less, no matter what the Masters of the Linguistic Universe try to decree.
