Whoopi Goldberg has come unhinged

.

The public’s confidence in the media is at record lows. Whoopi Goldberg just reminded us why. This week, The View host came unhinged and said one of the most absurd things about former President Donald Trump that’s ever aired on TV. (And that’s saying something!)

“This is what it’s all about,” Goldberg said of the 2024 presidential election. “Either you want [the country] to work forward-thinking, you want everybody to have the ability to say what they feel … or you don’t. Or you want somebody who says … [I’m going to] put you people away, I’m going to take all the journalists, all the gay folks, I’m going to move you all around and disappear you. If that’s the country you want, you know who to vote for,” she concluded. “That’s what MAGA wants,” co-host Joy Behar interjected.

You hear that, everybody? Trump, if reelected, is going to round up the gays and put them in camps. He’s going to make journalists disappear, too.

Newsflash, folks: Trump is not going to do any of this if he does win reelection. Goldberg seems to have invented this notion of putting gay people in camps out of whole cloth. Trump certainly hasn’t said anything like that during his presidential campaign to date. More importantly, there’s no better way to predict what someone would do as president than to look at what they actually did when they were president before.

Trump did lots of things I disagree with. But one thing he never did was “disappear” journalists or gay people. On the contrary, he made history as the first president to enter office supportive of gay marriage. He appointed gay people like Ric Grenell to high-level posts in his administration. He even launched a diplomatic initiative dedicated to the global decriminalization of homosexuality. He did do some other things on LGBT issues I disagree with, like his restrictions on transgender military service, but the idea that this guy is going to put gay people into camps is just ridiculous, hysterical nonsense.

Has the liberal media establishment learned nothing?

They continue to make the very same mistakes that got us Trump in the first place. The exaggeration, alarmism, doomsday warnings that never came true. The demonization of all Trump supporters. The willingness to spread fact-free misinformation in pursuit of a political agenda (remember Russiagate?). It all actually serves to discredit the many legitimate criticisms of Trump that these same people could make. Even when they do raise real issues, no one takes them seriously because they’re so obviously totally deranged when it comes to Trump.

Goldberg’s rhetoric is a gift to the former president. From mishandling COVID-19 to grifting off his own supporters to his disgraceful post-election behavior, Trump only gets away with all the bad stuff he gets away with because his most prominent critics are so deranged and have lied about him for so long that his supporters simply discount anything those critics have to say — and sometimes it’s hard to blame them.

Ironically, the people most panicked over the prospect of a second Trump presidency — like Whoopi Goldberg — will, in part, have themselves to blame if he does once again win the Oval Office.
