Democrats are the threat to democracy that Democrats are warning about

Democrats keep warning everyone about a looming threat to democracy. As has been the case for the last two decades or so, that threat is coming primarily from Democrats.
This is evident from the latest exercise in undermining democracy involving former President Donald Trump, courtesy of the Colorado Supreme Court. Four of the court’s Democratic-appointed justices decided to embrace the Democratic Party’s prevailing legal theory that the 14th Amendment can be used for anything and everything. In this case, those Democratic justices decided that Trump could be kept off Colorado’s ballots for “insurrection” despite not being convicted of anything and despite historical precedent to the contrary.

As you can imagine, disqualifying the front-runner of one of two major political parties from running for president despite him not being convicted of a crime is simply antidemocratic, especially doing so using a spurious legal theory that was not even applied to Confederates who rebelled against the United States.
But this isn’t where this conversation begins or ends. The distrust Trump sewed in elections by claiming he was cheated out of the presidency is what Democrats have done, with ranging levels of passion, for every presidential election they have lost since 2000. In 2000, they claimed it was the Supreme Court stealing the election from Democratic nominee Al Gore. In 2004, voting machines in Ohio allegedly rigged the state against Democratic nominee John Kerry. And in 2016, the Left asserted that “Russian collusion” stole the White House from Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Some congressional Democrats objected to the 2004 results, and more did the same after the 2016 election. Trump escalated this, of course, but that is how slippery slopes work. (You may also recall that Clinton and now-President Joe Biden set the stage to claim 2020 was stolen if Biden ended up losing.) Democrats opened the election denial floodgates. Trump was simply riding the wave.

That has continued and will continue with the Democratic delegitimization of the Supreme Court. Prominent Democrats have threatened that the court will “pay the price” for not adhering to their agenda. They have threatened to pack the court with Democratic loyalists to rule however they like, and they will do the same when the court inevitably strikes down Colorado’s decision. The threats to democracy, checks and balances, and the rule of law? They are all coming from inside the Democratic Party’s house.
None of this absolves Trump of his despicable and embarrassing behavior. But it is a reminder that he is not the sun around which all of politics rotates. That is simply how Democrats want everyone to view it so that people view their own decadeslong crusade against democracy as an afterthought rather than the trigger that put all of this in motion.
