Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) faced a tall order when he debated Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) on the only cable network that refuses to rig its coverage against Republicans. The California governor not only had to defend his state’s objective decline against the Florida governor’s exceptional record, but Newsom, a party princeling in waiting, also had to prove his deference to President Joe Biden and defend the president’s abysmal performance.
Who won in the Generation X showdown for the future of the country? The betting markets indicate Newsom lost, with his presidential primary odds against Biden down nearly 2.5% over the last day, and the relative silence from the corporate press indicates the Republican presidential hopeful bested the Democrat. But the real sign that red beat blue: Newsom’s own wife demanded the debate end.

Much has been made of the first-time and seemingly happy marriage between DeSantis, a known introvert, and his wife, Casey DeSantis. Precious little has been spilled about the much more interesting marriage of Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
An important thing to understand about Jennifer Siebel Newsom is that in exchange for becoming the second wife to a man who so famously cheated with a subordinate on his first wife (who happens to be the future daughter-in-law of the Republican presidential front-runner, Donald Trump), she gets to brand herself with the liberal moniker of being the “first partner” of California. And last night, the first partner panicked.
Recall that after 90 minutes of Gavin Newsom lying through his veneers, moderator Sean Hannity asked both governors if they were willing to extend the debate. Both eagerly agreed, and the show went to commercial break.
But it didn’t return, and now we know it was because Jennifer Siebel Newsom put a stop to it.
NBC News has a whopping five sources confirming that it was the wife who was responsible: “One of Siebel Newsom’s complaints centered around DeSantis’ mention of her father. DeSantis claimed that he told him he moved from California to Florida because it was better governed.”

DeSantis’s attack was accurate and fair game. Newsom’s hair-trigger response brings to mind not just the famously frail temper of Biden, but also that of Trump.
The polls will come out likely confirming that DeSantis won with his cogent case for Florida, but even if you don’t believe it, just take the word of Gavin Newsom’s own wife, who had to save him from himself.
