Democrats still in denial on cause of border crisis

Immigration has always been President Joe Biden’s worst issue, but for the first 18 months of Biden’s presidency, Democrats seemed to hope that voters would care about other issues more.
But now that millions of migrants have been released into the United States after being caught illegally crossing the southern border, bankrupting cities from New York City to Chicago to Denver, even Democratic states are telling pollsters that something needs to change.

A recent Siena College poll of New York found that 75% of Democrats said the recent influx of migrants to the state was at least a “somewhat serious” problem, and almost half (47%) said it was a “very serious” problem. Additionally, 53% of Democrats said the state should ”work to slow the flow of migrants to New York” compared to only 41% who said the state should take more migrants and “work to assimilate them.”
Nationally, a recent Fox News poll found that “three-quarters of Democrats” see the current situation at the border as an “emergency.”
So what do Democrats propose to do about the problem? Unfortunately, they seem stuck on the same failed policies that caused the current crisis in the first place.
Take Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), who, as chairman of the Judiciary Committee, is the lead Democratic negotiator on immigration. In a recent op-ed, Durbin wrote, “Most migrants come to America for the same reason my mother and her family did many years ago. They want a better life. They want a job.”
This is actually true! The millions of migrants that have flooded our southern border since Biden stopped enforcing our nation’s immigration laws are economic migrants. They are coming here to make more money than they can in their home countries. And Biden is letting them in to do so.
But then Durbin continues, “With crises in Ukraine and closer to home in places like Venezuela, many have been forced to flee for safety. Our immigration system was designed decades ago to respond to different challenges than we face today.”
This is completely false! The crisis on our southern border started years before Russia invaded Ukraine, and Venezuela has been a socialist basket case for years. The only reason migrants are coming now (and they are coming from not just Venezuela, but also Colombia, Brazil, Honduras, Mali, Senegal, China, and India) is because Biden is letting them in on bogus asylum claims.
Durbin just admitted a paragraph earlier that these migrants are coming for economic reasons. The problem is that Biden and the Democrats are letting these migrants abuse our asylum system.
If the Biden administration would just stop releasing migrants arrested for illegally crossing the southern border into the country and instead return them to Mexico, the crisis would end immediately.
Durbin can’t bring himself to admit this. His op-ed doesn’t even identify asylum abuse as a problem. Instead, he prattles on about the need to give illegal immigrants already here more work permits. Not only does this “solution” completely ignore why even Democrats now say the border crisis is an emergency, but it would only make the existing crisis worse.

Making it easier for illegal immigrants to work in the United States will only cause more illegal immigrants to come. Durbin even admitted this earlier in his op-ed when he said migrants are coming here for jobs. Of course they are! Which is why if you make it easier for them to get jobs, even more will come.
Until Democrats are ready to admit the border crisis is caused by the fact that economic migrants are abusing our asylum system, and that the asylum system needs to change so that migrants are denied entry until their claims are approved, then the crisis will only get worse.
