Another Democrat wonders why her Democratic-run city is so terrible

As the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder approaches, some people say the best way to honor him is for Congress to pass a bill in his name that overhauls policing. Hopes of passing a package by the May 25 anniversary have faded as negotiations between the House and Senate grind on. But Bass, a top negotiator, said she remains hopeful of an eventual compromise. The most embarrassing thing about Democratic-run cities is that every Democrat who becomes mayor perpetuates the cycle of terrible governance that the next Democratic mayor always runs against.

The latest example of this is Karen Bass, the newly elected Democratic mayor of Los Angeles. Bass took to Twitter to tell her constituents that they “should not have to work three jobs just to afford to pay rent in Los Angeles.” It’s a noble sentiment and one that everyone could agree on. And yet, Bass was promoted by the same Democratic establishment in Los Angeles that is responsible for the current state of the city.

MAYOR KAREN BASS DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY ON HOMELESSNESS IN LOS ANGELES

Bass was endorsed by former mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and several current and former City Council members, as well as the most prominent Democrats in California and the country. She was endorsed by the Los Angeles Times. The people who had a hand in making Los Angeles so unaffordable are the same people who have run Los Angeles for years.

Democrats have run Los Angeles since 2001. They have run the city for 53 of the last 61 years. Bass was never a candidate for change; she was always a continuation of the status quo. And this is the norm in Democratic-run cities across the country.

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones (D) last year talked about how she and her son “often fall asleep to a lullaby of bullets,” which has become normalized in St. Louis after 73 consecutive years of Democrat control. The deadliest cities in the country have been controlled by Democrats for decades. And yet the Democratic establishment always manages to push its latest candidates across the finish line on promises of fixing what decades of Democratic governance have ignored.

Los Angeles is unaffordable, crime-ridden, and unable to solve a homelessness crisis that is only getting worse. And the next Democrat to run for mayor of the city will complain about the same issues because voters are content to just swap one do-nothing Democrat for another.
