After a chaotic week in the House of Representatives, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) confirmed he is considering a bid for the upper chamber. The New Jersey Republican told Fox Business on Thursday morning that he is weighing a run for the seat of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), who is up for reelection next year.

THE RACE IS ON: WHO COULD REPLACE MCCARTHY AS SPEAKER?

The beleaguered Democrat is facing a second round of federal corruption charges, but despite calls across his party for his resignation, Menendez has held fast. Although he stepped down as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Menendez maintains his innocence and has signaled he will indeed run for reelection.

Van Drew, a former Democrat, crossed the aisle to join the GOP after opposing the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump. He won his R+5 district by nearly 19 points in 2022 and by 5.7 points in 2020, a slightly greater margin than Trump’s 5-point lead in New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District.

Van Drew supported since-ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and has now thrown his weight behind the speakership bid of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
