We still do not have any official border numbers from last month, which everyone expects to be bad, but it now appears that the number of migrants arrested for illegally crossing the southern border this month could hit a record high.

Bill Melugin of Fox News reports that “in the last 24 hours alone, over 10,000 migrants were encountered at the border, bringing us back to the all time record high levels we last saw in May before the end of Title 42.”

BLAME BIDENOMICS FOR UAW STRIKE

Amid all this chaos, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced Wednesday that the Biden administration would be granting temporary protected status to all Venezuelans who can show they were present in the United States before July 31, 2023.

Granting TPS to migrants had been a top priority of Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) and New York City Mayor Eric Adams. TPS comes with work permits, and the thinking was that if the Venezuelans in New York could find legal work faster, then they could exit city and state migrant shelters faster as well too.

Most migrants in New York are already working illegally, but enabling them to work legally could help some families move out of shelters faster on the margin. But would this really help New York’s situation if only more migrants kept coming because they believe they will be given legal status too?

TPS is supposed to be “temporary,” but once granted it is very rarely rescinded. Migrants know this. Which is why they keep coming. They know that if they can just get into the country, even by illegal means, Democrats will never deport them.

Mayorkas tried to combat this perception Wednesday, assuring reporters that immigrants who enter the country after the supposed July 31 deadline would not be protected and would be “removed when they are found to not have a legal basis to stay.”

But migrants know this is a lie. Mayorkas has made no effort to deport migrants already in the country before, and he is not going to suddenly start doing so now.

Just look at these quotes from Venezuelan migrants explaining why they are not waiting for CBP One app appointments like Biden wants them to.

“What is the point of the CBP appointment? My brother surrendered, and he got through. We know too many stories of people who got through without an appointment,” Yonder Linarez told Nick Miroff. “We tried it, but it took too long,” he continued. “If we’ve endured the jungle, robbery, and everything else to get here, you think not having an appointment is going to stop us?”

No, of course it’s not. These migrants have invested thousands of dollars to bribe Mexican cartels to let them come to the border. Their friends and family members already here accurately tell them that if they cross illegally and get arrested, Biden will release them and let them go wherever they want in the United States.

Who are they going to trust? Their family members who have been truthful about American immigration policy, or Mayorkas who constantly lies through his teeth?

Of course they are trusting their family. That is why so many are coming every day.
