The United Nations is a useless organization full of grandstanding and funded by billions in United States taxpayer dollars. You need not take my word for it, though; the U.N. secretary-general will tell you himself.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told CNN that he has “no power” and “no money” when it comes to decision-making with respect to the U.N. Security Council. You may know it as the council where the world’s two most sinister actors, China and Russia, have automatic vetoes as “permanent members” of the council. Instead, Guterres said, “What we have is a voice and that voice can be loud and I have the obligation to make it be loud.”

SOCIALIST GROCERY STORES WON’T STOP CHICAGO CRIME

On the one hand, this is certainly good news. Guterres is a socialist who previously served as the socialist prime minister of Portugal. He does not deserve to have any power over much of anything. But, on the other hand, it raises the question of what exactly we need the United Nations for, and why are U.S. taxpayers expected to fund it?

Guterres’s comments come as the U.N. General Assembly begins its general debate, where world leaders get up to give speeches that they can then cut into ads or promotional videos and carry little substance. President Joe Biden, for example, told the room full of authoritarians that everyone should focus on preserving peace and preventing conflict, which are apparently groundbreaking concepts that no one has ever considered.

Guterres’s own voice is useless, as evidenced by the U.N.’s many failures. The U.N. Human Rights Council is home to several countries that are still practicing slavery. Russia, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, has launched several invasions of its neighbors, including the ongoing onslaught against Ukraine. Sure, Guterres can make his voice “loud,” but what he can’t do is make it influential in any way.

And all of this is funded to the tune of billions from U.S. taxpayers, with $12.5 billion going from the U.S. to the United Nations in 2021. So, at what point do we realize that this investment is a dud? Guterres himself is willing to admit that his job is pointless. The U.S. should admit the same.
