DeSantis to criminals: ‘You loot, we shoot’

Supermarkets in San Francisco may have their merchandise under lock and key because Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) tolerates shoplifting, but Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has the exact opposite message for would-be looters in the wake of Hurricane Idalia.

“You loot, we shoot,” DeSantis said at a press conference in Perry, Florida, after Hurricane Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beach yesterday.

“People have a right to defend their property — this part of Florida, you got a lot of advocates and proponents of the Second Amendment,” DeSantis continued.

“You never know what’s behind that door if you go break into somebody’s house and you’re trying to loot, these are people that are going to be able to defend themselves and their families,” the governor added. “We are going to hold you accountable from a law enforcement perspective at a minimum, and it could even be worse than that depending on what’s behind that door.”

While DeSantis has been leading the emergency response for Floridians affected by Hurricane Idalia, former President Donald Trump has done nothing but attack DeSantis.

“DeSanctimonious is crashing. Perhaps the party should come together. People should drop out of the race,” Trump shouted out the camera in just one of four videos posted by Trump attacking DeSantis since the hurricane hit Florida. At no point has Trump even mentioned the hurricane yet.

Since skipping last week’s first Republican presidential debate, Trump has fallen in the polls while DeSantis has gained ground.

One poll of debate watchers found that the percentage of Republican primary voters considering voting for DeSantis rose from 63% before the debate to 67.5% after the debate, surpassing Trump, who fell from 66.2% to 61.4%.

No wonder Trump is desperately attacking DeSantis while he ably leads Florida through a natural disaster.
