The slow creep of mask mandates for COVID-19 is returning again, and it must be rejected in every area of life that petty bureaucrats attempt to impose those requirements.

Mask mandates are already making their return to the bastion of liberal lunacy that is higher education. Morris Brown College in Atlanta has reinstituted a mask mandate, unironically embracing the broken promise of “15 days to slow the spread” by setting an initial mandate of 14 days. It will also be enforcing social distancing, contact tracing, and quarantines.

Rutgers University and Georgetown University have also mandated masks for students indoors. The authoritarian creep is also making its way back into the entertainment industry, with Lionsgate saying, “The LA County Department of Public Health is requiring Lionsgate employees” at its headquarters “to wear masks due to a cluster of COVID cases.”

Liberal media outlets are also pushing a return to masking, with both CNN and CBS News deferring to “experts” and pushing people toward masking in the near future. Never mind that masking does not work to stop the spread of COVID, as we saw throughout the pandemic and was concluded again earlier this year by a global group of scientists. The COVID authoritarianism is on its way back whether “the science” supports it or not.

This must be rejected, outright, in any area of life before it makes its way back to every area of life. Mask mandates were a failure. They had marginal positive impacts at best and were destructive at their worst, particularly when it came to children. If mask mandates are humored in Hollywood and at liberal universities and media outlets, it is only a matter of time before those mandates are being pushed again on businesses and schools.

And COVID authoritarianism won’t stop there, a fact we know because we saw this all play out already. Rutgers has already imposed a vaccine mandate along with its mask mandate again, and others will certainly follow suit, even though the vaccine did not stop the spread of COVID either. Quarantines and shutdowns won’t be far behind either, and states such as California will continue to look for ways to stretch their authoritarianism under the guise of COVID policy, just as state Democrats have done in the past year.

COVID authoritarianism is not just something that is going to fade. Politicians and bureaucrats aren’t just going to give up the idea of their emergency powers lightly. It must be rejected, resoundingly, whenever a mask mandate, vaccine mandate, or quarantine proposal is brought forward. There is no excuse for the country to surrender itself to the ineffective, anti-science policies of power-hungry bureaucrats ever again.
