Republican debate: Trump’s interview with Tucker Carlson was pointless

Former President Donald Trump drew much criticism for deciding not to attend the first Republican presidential debate Wednesday night. Instead, he opted to do an interview with Tucker Carlson. After watching the debate and Trump’s interview with Carlson, one thing was certainly clear: Trump should have participated in the debate. His interview with Carlson was pointless.

Suppose you were a Republican voter who wanted to hear the best way to defeat President Joe Biden in 2024 and solutions to confront the challenges facing the nation. In that case, you might think listening to the former president, the current front-runner, would have been the best decision. However, Trump didn’t offer much of a vision for going forward. The former president spent much of the time talking about the usual: election fraud, fake news, why people love and hate him, and, for some odd reason, very briefly, Jeffrey Epstein.

Briefly, Carlson asked Trump about environmental issues and electric cars, and there was some banter between the two on what Trump would do on these issues if reelected. However, there was not much substance to the exchange. The most interesting part of the interview came when Carlson asked Trump how he would keep government agencies under control.

“If you get elected again, go back to Washington, how do you keep the agencies under control? How do you keep the FBI and CIA, specifically, under control?” Carlson asked.

“You do it like I fired Comey. That was a big deal, and I fired him very early,” Trump said. “I fired Comey — that was a great thing. If I didn’t fire Comey, maybe I wouldn’t be talking to you or I’d be talking to you about real estate or something else other than politics.”

“That was a coup, in my opinion,” Trump continued. “That was a very sick deal.”

Trump then rambled on about Comey and Hillary Clinton. It didn’t make much sense and didn’t answer Carlson’s question. It was a reminder from Trump that he fired FBI Director James Comey, but as we all know, firing Comey didn’t stop the government agencies from being “out of control.”

Unfortunately, it was a lost opportunity for the former president. Instead of discussing the future, Trump spent most of the time discussing the past.
