The most impressive thing about Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is how his policies and rhetoric contradict each other at almost every available opportunity.

On Monday, Newsom continued this cycle by claiming that no state is better than California when it comes to “local control and parental engagement.” He made this claim based on the Democratic Party’s myth about “book bans.” That narrative spawned from Florida’s moves to take pornographic books out of school classrooms and curriculums. Newsom is proud to stand on the other side of that debate.

The contradiction comes from the policies that Newsom and California Democrats support. In several California school districts, “parental engagement” takes a back seat to transgenderism. Teachers and school bureaucrats are instructed to hide the mental health issues of students from parents, including if their child is adopting a new identity when at school. In fact, the California Teachers Association held a conference in which teachers were instructed just how to hide information from parents.

This is reflected in California’s policies. The state’s top education official crashed a school board meeting to fight against a policy that would require teachers and school staff to inform parents about their children’s mental health issues. The state legislature has already set the stage to take children away from parents who do not “affirm” that their child is transgender and start them on irreversible gender transitions.

“Local control and parental engagement” up until you want to protect your child from harming themselves in pursuit of permanent sex changes.

Newsom’s contradictions cover a wide range of topics. Two of the three states he proposed for his debate with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Georgia and North Carolina, are on the list of states that California bans state-funded travel to. Newsom also traveled to Texas and Florida in violation of the ban, as well as vacationed in Montana, which his team tried to keep private. Even if he is personally funding travel to those states, he is certainly violating the “spirit” of the law.

That’s the same thing Newsom acknowledged he did when he celebrated the birthday of a lobbyist at an upscale French restaurant in violation of the coronavirus lockdowns he imposed. Speaking of COVID-19, while closing schools in the fall of 2020, Newsom sent his children to private school so they could attend in-person classes. And Newsom talks a big game on climate change while hamstringing California by targeting nuclear energy and cutting climate programs from the state’s budget to save money.

Newsom’s tenure as governor is filled with just as many contradictions as there are failures. He is able to ignore them shamelessly because he’s a popular Democrat whom legacy media love in a state where Democrats rarely face an electoral challenge, but there should be no misconceptions about just how sleazy of a politician Newsom really is.
