An illegal Chinese bio lab was operating secretly in California while dealing with infectious diseases. Naturally, the biggest concern legacy media has is “misinformation.”

That is how the Associated Press framed its coverage of the story, writing that the lab “fueled conspiracy theories” but “officials say it posed no danger.” The outlet defended Prestige Biotech, the company that was illegally operating the secret lab, saying that authorities “found no criminal activity” and that the story “fueled fears, rumors and conspiracy theories” about Chinese bioweapons.

The Associated Press then cited a professor who shamed people as racist for being concerned about the lab, echoing the tired media trope that any criticism or concern about Chinese companies or state operations in the U.S. is dangerous to Chinese Americans. It is the same thing legacy media outlets parroted during the pandemic, when questions were raised about the possibility that COVID-19 came from a Chinese lab. Some Democrats tried to absolve the Chinese government of the pandemic entirely under this same logic.

As it turned out, COVID-19 almost certainly did come from a Chinese lab in Wuhan. There is no denying that the Chinese government covered up the outbreak and lied to the world about the seriousness of the virus, causing a global pandemic that killed nearly 7 million people. The concerns about the Chinese government were valid.

The concerns about this lab were valid too. Yes, Reedley officials performed several tests and confirmed that there were no airborne threats or water contamination while withholding information from the public, but that doesn’t mean there was never any danger from the lab. It was operating in secret, without any proper permits or registrations, including for medical waste. Around 20 infectious agents were found in the lab, including herpes, hepatitis, and HIV. There were 200 dead mice on-site.

The company’s COVID tests, which is what the lab claimed it was working on, were nationally recalled earlier this year. And we know that the lab had a fire at its previous location in Fresno before moving to its secret lab in Reedley. Sure, this (probably) wasn’t some grand conspiracy by the Chinese government to launch a bioweapon on U.S. soil, but the company was illegally operating with infectious diseases in secret and has clearly proved to be incompetent at best.

Oh, and the company wanted to move into a new location right next to Fresno’s international airport. Infectious diseases, dead and contaminated mice, and illegal medical waste in the hands of a company with a record of incompetence, all next to an airport that transports hundreds of thousands of people to other, larger airports every year – what exactly are you so concerned about?

The real story here is the illegal Chinese bio lab secretly operating on U.S. soil, and the possibility of there being more labs like it, three years after a Chinese lab was responsible for a global pandemic. But the Associated Press would rather focus on “misinformation” and “conspiracy theories” because its obsession with allegations of ethnic bigotry takes priority over public health, even though public health is being threatened by Chinese medical companies and even the Chinese government.
