The USWNT’s loss is a perfect sendoff for Megan Rapinoe

The United States Women’s National Team’s embarrassing World Cup run has come to an end, and it couldn’t be a more appropriate sendoff for the retiring Megan Rapinoe.
The USWNT went down in the Round of 16 to Sweden in penalty kicks, completing the worst World Cup run in team history. It also marks the end of Rapinoe’s international career, a team “legend” who does not rank in the top ten of games played and ranks tenth in goals scored in team history.

It is an appropriate send-off for Rapinoe, who turned the last several years of the USWNT’s success into a partisan parade for liberals. She made her contempt for America clear by taking part in performative anti-American protests during the national anthem. She is a hypocrite who demands that others “listen more and talk less” while she whines and complains about “equal pay” while getting all of her facts wrong.
Rapinoe has also helped to destroy women’s and girls’ sports heading into the future, as she has become a big booster of allowing men and boys to play with and against female athletes. Girls getting injured against male athletes, losing scholarship opportunities and roster spots, and being forced to change in the same locker room as male athletes who claim they are female? Rapinoe thinks each of those is a problem that “doesn’t even exist,” even though you can cite examples for all of them.
Over the past two World Cups, Rapinoe has turned the USWNT into a political vehicle, all but openly encouraging half the country not to share in the team’s success. She metaphorically spat on the American flag that she and the rest of the team play under. She embodied the worst stereotypes of American entitlement.
Our sports culture will be better without her.

Unfortunately, Rapinoe won’t leave the stage easily. She will almost certainly pivot full-time to the political activism she brought to the USWNT. She will continue advocating for fewer opportunities for female athletes in the name of transgenderism.
She will be just as obnoxious and toxically political as she has been. Hopefully, her political career will be filled with many more losses like the one Sweden handed her in her final game out.
