Much has been made of President Joe Biden’s age and seemingly declining mental capabilities. He’s received criticism from many people who claim he is too old to be president. The octogenarian doesn’t help himself much, given Biden’s numerous slip-ups, malapropisms, and absentminded actions. Now, it appears such actions might have cost Biden in public opinion. A recent poll showed that most voters aren’t confident that he is “mentally and physically up to the job of being President of the United States.”

According to a recent Rasmussen Reports survey, 54% of voters are not confident in Biden’s abilities to lead the country. This includes a breakdown of 42% of respondents claiming “they are not at all confident” in the president’s abilities and 12% stating they are “not very confident.” Conversely, 44% of voters said they were confident in Biden’s capabilities, including 19% saying they were “somewhat confident” in him, according to Rasmussen.

Biden’s support carried mainly along party lines. Of those supporting Biden, 43% of Democrats said they were “very confident” that Biden was “physically and mentally up to the job of being President of the United States.” Conversely, 71% of Republican voters were “not at all confident” that Biden was up to being president.

The discrepancy among party lines is no shock. However, the fact that only 43% of Democrats were “very confident” in Biden is telling. It’s also reflective of the image problem that Biden has, even among his strong supporters. Having 71% of Republicans not confident in Biden is to be expected. Having less than half of Democratic voters claiming they are “very confident” in the president is far from a strong endorsement. It’s indicative of the lack of faith that many Democratic voters have in their supposed leader of the party.
