Former Vice President Mike Pence should probably be the ideal presidential candidate. He’s an intelligent, articulate, and principled man. He’s previously championed the right to life, publicly supported many conservative cultural issues in the past, and repeatedly demonstrated he’s one to reject temptation – whether it is refusing to put himself in a position of dining with other women who aren’t his wife or giving into political pressure to decertify an election.

Pence seems to have an excellent moral compass.

BIDEN’S DEFICITS THREATEN ECONOMIC DOOM

So it was somewhat shocking to hear him respond, “It’s not my concern,” when Tucker Carlson asked him where the concern was to prioritize Americans struggling, instead of sending billions of dollars in taxpayer money for the war in Ukraine.

“Our economy has degraded, the suicide rate has jumped, public filth and disorder and crime have exponentially increased, and yet, your concern is that the Ukrainians — a country most people can’t find on a map — who’ve received tens of billions of U.S. tax dollars, don’t have enough tanks,” Carlson said in an interview at the Family Leadership Summit last week. “I think it’s a fair question to ask, like, where’s the concern for the United States in that?”

Pence replied: “That’s not my concern. Tucker, I’ve heard this routine from you before. That’s not my concern.” And then Pence paused – and effectively ended whatever minimal chance he had at the presidency to begin with. He showed everyone exactly why he has no chance at winning the 2024 Republican nomination for president, let alone defeating Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election.

Granted, to be fair, Pence did follow up and add comments that make his original “not my concern” reply less alarming and cringe-worthy. And many on social media showed the clip of Pence’s response without revealing what he said after.

“I’m running for president in the United States because I think this country is in a lot of trouble. I think Joe Biden has weakened America at home and abroad,” Pence said. “As president of the United States, we’re going to restore law and order in our cities. We’re going to secure our border, we’re going to get this economy moving again. And we’re going to make sure that we have men and women on our courts at every level that will stand for the right to life and defend all the God-given liberties enshrined in our Constitution.”

Nevertheless, this doesn’t change that it reflected poorly on Pence. He could have essentially said the same thing without uttering, “That’s not my concern.” The fact that he didn’t further shows why he is ill-equipped to run for the GOP nomination.

I have never run for president of the United States, and even I could have crafted a superior reply that echoes the sentiment of the country’s greatness while acknowledging the very real struggles that many Americans face.

Many Americans believe we should not be sending billions of dollars in taxpayer money to another country when that money could be spent on helping Americans first.

American taxpayer money should help Americans first before it helps the rest of the world. It is a genuine and logical sentiment that many politicians, especially Republican politicians, regularly mess up with when trying to connect with voters. But this is indicative as to why Pence has no chance in the election. Furthermore, it also shows why Pence is just … really bad at running for president.
