Two weeks ago, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) revealed that California’s budget deficit was higher than estimated. Now, the state’s Legislative Analyst’s Office says even Newsom’s new budget that accounted for that fact is not affordable.

According to the LAO, which helps guide the state legislature on spending decisions, the projected budget deficit is $34.5 billion, more than the $31.5 billion that Newsom previously projected. The LAO also estimates California’s revenues will be $11 billion lower than Newsom is projecting.

That means the state would need to consider further spending cuts than those in Newsom’s budget, which already only gives spending raises to healthcare agencies and public schools while making cuts across the board, or raising taxes. California already has the fifth-highest tax burden in the country. Choose the form of your own destructor: drowning residents in more taxes or slashing spending even further.

Again, this all comes as Newsom spends his time firing off tweets about Republican-run states. You would be forgiven if you thought he was actually in charge of governing the largest state in the country as it goes through budget problems, a declining population, and the worst poverty and homelessness problems in the country. Luckily for California residents, Newsom spent all that time visiting liberal arts schools in Florida. Who needs an affordable budget when you can get those media headlines?

Newsom’s media crusade against red states is all bluster to promote his own profile and distract from the fact that he is running into the ground what should be the best state in the country. California has an ideal climate compared to, say, Texas or Florida, yet Newsom is overseeing massive population losses as the state prices out middle- and lower-class families. California is a failing state, in part because the man in charge takes no interest in making it better.
