If only female athletes cared as much about protecting women’s sports as they do about Sydney Sweeney ads

.

Actress Sydney Sweeney has caused liberals, Democrats, socialists, communists, and other left-wingers to freak out again. And just as before, it’s due to the incessant whining, lack of diverse ideological thought, and, quite frankly, exclusive behavior by people upset over the actress’s latest commercial.

Multiple female athletes have expressed their displeasure with Sweeney’s appearance in a provocative ad for the sports trading company Novig. It was the kind of furor, condemnation, and outrage one would hope female athletes would be making about the very real issue of biological men claiming they are women to compete in women’s sports, instead of a sports trading ad unrelated to women’s sports.

”Think you know sports?” Sweeney says. “Prove it. Novig is just sports. So, they wanted a show.” She continues to make comments in a seductive fashion with strategically placed footballs, shoulder pads, basketballs, hockey gear, and other sports equipment. All of it was to advertise that bettors can access Novig to place bets on a variety of sports.

“Sports. Sports. Sports. Sports. Sports,” Sweeney says. But she says or does nothing about women’s sports, which is the claim these athletes have been making.

The outraged athletes were from across the globe, with Olympians and other award-winning athletes criticizing the advertisement, claiming it sexualized female athletics.

The reason behind the fury? The athletes were upset that Sweeney appeared mostly nude in the advertisement for the sports betting site, claiming that it was the sexualization of women’s sports. The problem is, it did no such thing. Novig is a sports trading company, not a female sports organization. Sweeney was not portrayed as an athlete in the Novig advertisement, nor was she performing any athletic feats. She never engaged in any athletic prowess, nor did she make any mention of women’s sports. The outrage was unwarranted.

Consider some of the comments.

“Idk what Sydney Sweeney was doing, but this is what a woman in sports looks like,” gymnast Gracie Kramer said on her Instagram. Kramer’s caption was underneath pictures of Kramer’s gymnastic competitions.

“When sexualization is used as a way to get men interested in women’s sports, it reinforces the exact narrative we’ve been trying to dismantle,” Kramer said in an interview with NBC News. “This isn’t celebrity drama to me. It’s about the culture we’re creating for the next generation of girls in sports and making sure they grow up believing their talent is enough to deserve attention and respect.”

But again, Sweeney’s sexually charged ad was not used as a way to get men interested in women’s sports. The two are completely unrelated. The provocative ad was used to generate interest in sports betting, particularly on Novig.

“I think it was in [Sweeney’s] head, probably, some funny joke, but it’s not a joke when your life is actually you being a female athlete and being, like, sexualized or not taken seriously or not given the same opportunities,” Canadian Olympic skier Cassidy Gray said.

“I can’t describe how infuriated I feel when I watch this,” Australian Olympic gold-medal swimmer Ariarne Titmus said in a post on Instagram. “How do we live in a world where monetizing a woman’s body and sexualizing women’s sport is still a thing?”

Has Titmus never read the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, which, incidentally, features numerous female athletes in sexually provocative poses while scantily clad?

Other female athletes shared similar nagging sentiments. It was performative outrage for an issue that deserved neither outrage nor performance. It’s indicative of the toxicity of contemporary feminism lately. These female athletes will make vociferous declarations about Sweeney, an issue that affects absolutely nobody. Yet when it comes to biological men playing against women in sports, an issue that takes away opportunities from women, harms women, and negatively affects women, the vociferous are quite quiet.

The athletes commenting should have been as nonchalant and dismissive as if the commercial were Sweeney pretending to be a man claiming to be a woman participating in women’s athletics. People should start caring about their remarks, hyperbolic hysteria, and performative outrage over Sweeney’s advertisement for a sports betting company when these athletes express the same kind of condemnation over transgender athletes.
