Democrats are suing the Trump administration because they seemingly want to continue to import immigrants whom they can ensure will remain dependent on the government and, as a result, remain committed to the Democratic Party.
Multiple Democratic cities and counties, led by New York City and its socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, have sued the Trump administration to block a new immigration rule. That rule would require U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to consider whether a green card applicant is on welfare before granting them permanent legal status. This “public charge” rule considers things such as food stamps, Medicaid, and housing assistance as factors that determine whether aspiring immigrants would be leeching from taxpayers rather than contributing to the country.

According to Mamdani, “The new public charge rule seeks to push immigrant families away from the programs that have kept people fed and healthy for decades.”
Yes. That is the point.
There is no reason for American taxpayers to be asked to accept new immigrants to the country who are immediately put on taxpayer-funded welfare. Why should we be inviting people to this country who are dependent on government funds? Why should taxpayers be asked to shoulder the burden of people from other countries who move here with no ability to contribute to the American experiment, knowing that importing more of these people will place a bigger burden on these welfare programs, which will require taxes to rise even higher?
Democrats want this because Democrats like looking for shortcuts to acquire voters that require as little persuasion as possible. Democrats like creating and expanding welfare programs because people on those programs are more likely to vote for the Democrats. Keeping voters dependent on welfare is politically advantageous for Democrats, and it colors how they view immigrants as well.

This is why Democrats are happy to allow illegal immigrants to cross the border. Democrats pass several taxpayer-funded giveaways for illegal immigrants, knowing that their children born in the U.S. will be citizens (and that Democrats keep trying to change rules to allow illegal immigrants themselves to vote in elections). This lawsuit is an extension of that strategy: import and grant legal status to immigrants who are dependent on government money and have nothing to offer but a vote for the Democratic politicians who have created those dependent programs.
The Democratic Party wants more and more voters to be dependent on the government, and that means Democrats would be happy to continue to import more future voters who are already government dependents. Democrats view immigration as just another method to try to increase their political power, and that is all the party cares about, even if it means hardworking Americans continue to see their tax dollars go to people who contribute nothing to their communities.
