Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul el Sayed has realized that his terrorist-sympathizing antisemitism is unpopular and is trying to sprint away from it, using the most insincere excuses possible.
El Sayed has tried to walk back several of his own comments, chief among them being his reaction to the attempted terrorist attack against Jewish Michigan preschoolers in March. In that attack, an Islamic terrorist whose Hezbollah terrorist brothers were killed by Israel attempted to shoot up a Jewish preschool. In response to this shooting, el Sayed spent more time condemning Israel than the terrorist himself, claiming that “hurt people hurt people” and that, if Israel didn’t kill the man’s terrorist siblings, then he wouldn’t have had to resort to trying to massacre Jewish preschool children on the other side of the globe.
El Sayed now admits that “I should have issued a statement, of course condemning it, and it just should have been the full stop.” And yet, he did not do that. In fact, at the time, his team reportedly held an internal meeting saying that condemning the attack was a “risk” and that it was important to put out a “nuanced statement” about the Islamic terrorist trying to murder American children. It then took el Sayed five months to acknowledge his moral failings.
Meanwhile, el Sayed is trying to distance himself from Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, simultaneously defending Piker and his history of hateful, pro-violent comments while dismissing questions because Piker is just “a Twitch streamer in California.” But it was el Sayed who chose to bring that Twitch streamer from California along with him for campaign events in Michigan. Piker was not a fan sitting on the sidelines; he was a key representative of el Sayed’s campaign.
Some comments, el Sayed hopes to bury, such as his comments downplaying the 9/11 terrorist attacks (you know, the 9/11 terrorist attacks that his buddy Piker said America deserved to experience). Others, he is still desperately trying to defend, like his hatred of Fourth of July fireworks, which he says is because of his deep concern for people who have asthma.

Ah, but worry not: El Sayed plans to hire a “Jewish liaison” to help assuage concerns from Jewish voters that he couldn’t condemn an attempted Islamic terrorist attack against Jewish preschool children. Problem solved.
El Sayed is an antisemite. He is a terrorist sympathizer. He has shown his true character plenty, and is only now trying to whitewash or dismiss the radical elements of his worldview because he thinks it will hurt him against generic Republican Mike Rogers in the general election in two months. None of these “apologies” or explanations are genuine or believable. They are all just el Sayed’s attempts to make himself more electable so he can bring his hateful ideology to the U.S. Senate.
