Why do Democrats still insist life must be ‘separate but equal’ for black Americans?

.

The modern Democratic Party continues to assert through its priorities that life must be segregated for black Americans, and no Democrat seems interested in reckoning with how absurd that thought process is.

The Supreme Court’s decision to essentially end race-based redistricting in congressional maps has left Democrats screaming that black voters are having their rights taken away. This is because many Republican-run southern states will now redistrict to remove the solid Democratic “minority-majority” seats in their delegations. This means that GOP states no longer need to craft special districts for black Democratic voters, such as Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District, represented by Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson.

Democrats will insist that this is institutional racism on par with how southern (then-Democrat-run) states disenfranchised black voters before the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Democrats are asking you to believe that racism now is as bad as racism then, and demanding that black voters receive their own segregated districts in southern states, with special carveouts from the traditional rules that apply to discrimination laws. Separate but equal black districts, if you will.

Take this concern from Emmanuel Felton of the Washington Post, who claimed that “Memphis is the second Blackest big city in the country, and it’s about to be gerrymandered within an inch of its life so a white Republican can represent it in Congress.” The emphasis on “white” is interesting here because Memphis is currently represented by a white Democrat, Rep. Steve Cohen. Felton then insisted that he meant that black voters in Memphis should have “opportunities to elect their preferred candidates regardless of race.”

But they already do have that opportunity, just the same as every other American voter. The bizarre implication here is that black Americans are so wildly different from their countrymen that they must have these specially segregated districts. To use their terminology, Democrats and the Left are “othering” black Americans, insisting that they must be treated differently, as if they cannot function in the United States without special treatment.

This is not limited to congressional districts, either. Since the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots and the progressive fever that accompanied them, the Left has increasingly insisted that black Americans must have segregated areas of life away from their fellow Americans. This extended to pressuring the NFL to have a separate but equal “black national anthem” before games, universities hosting black-only graduation festivities, and California segregating multiple aspects of life, including Amber Alerts, school discussions between staff and parents, and play dates for children.

The position of Democrats and the Left is that black Americans cannot function alongside their countrymen without special segregated spaces. It is a racist echo of the Democratic Party’s past support of segregation, and yet they have unwittingly repackaged 1960s racism as “progressive” and attempted to impose it on every area of American life. This is the racism that must be defeated in modern America, if we are to truly be a country where everyone judges each other by their actions and their character.
