Skier Eileen Gu represents the worst of the Olympics, and her opinion on President Donald Trump or any other area of American politics is worth absolutely nothing.
Liberal American media outlets are tripping over themselves to ask American athletes to condemn Trump and the GOP, especially on the Olympic stage. This led to American skier Hunter Hess whining and moaning about how conflicted he is about representing America at the games. Trump responded by calling Hess a “real loser,” a fair (if Trumpian) characterization of people who, as Hess did, base their pride in the United States on which political party is in power.
WHY CHINA IS FUELING RUSSIA’S WAR ON UKRAINE
Gu was also asked to weigh in, condemning Trump’s comments and saying “it really runs contrary to everything the Olympics should be.” Here is the problem with that: Gu was an American, born and raised in San Francisco, but it isn’t even clear if she is an American citizen anymore. In 2019, she chose to represent Communist China on the world stage.
That means that Gu willingly chose to make herself a tool of the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda through its sports operations. She can claim all she wants that it was to inspire Chinese children to become skiers like her, but that does not change the reality of the government she chose to represent. It also doesn’t change the fact that her commitment to China has earned her tens of millions of dollars in Chinese endorsement money. You can argue about what is inspiring whom here.
HONG KONG PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST JIMMY LAI SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS
Whether her motivations are genuine, financial, or a combination of both, it does not matter. Gu chose to represent a genocidal, militarily expansionist, authoritarian government. She is the face of the CCP at the Winter Olympics. Her opinion about anything related to American politics is utterly useless because she willingly chose to represent the Chinese government. She has no leg to stand on criticizing America, because she chose to represent a country that would imprison (or worse) any of its athletes who did what Hess did.
Gu is no different than any other mouthpiece of the Chinese government. If she wants to be idolized by Chinese children living under a repressive government (and earn tens of billions of dollars in the process), that’s fine. She should not be idolized or respected by any American, and her opinion on anything related to American politics should get her laughed out of the room.
