Mark Carney should have no say in a new global order

.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is trying to present his country as some moral counter to the United States under President Donald Trump. A quick look at his own foreign policy shows that, under his leadership, Canada is morally bankrupt.

Carney took to the stage at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland with a speech about how our precious system of “international law” is being destroyed, and how there must be a new global order where leaders have integrity and morality and don’t rely on the cooperation of the top global powers. It was littered with shots at Trump and the U.S. without naming names, with Carney saying that countries should not “go along to get along,” not “accommodate” or “avoid trouble,” because compliance will not buy safety.

Trump has not helped this matter, to be sure, but one does not need to sell their soul to oppose him and his reckless rhetoric. That is true for American former “conservatives,” and it is also true for world leaders. Carney can peddle this ‘Resistance’ slop all he wants, knowing that American Democrats and Europeans will eat it up, but his talk of not going along to get along with antagonistic world powers rings hollow when Carney is cozying Canada up to the Chinese Communist Party.

Just one year after calling China “the biggest security threat” facing Canada, Carney has decided to “recalibrate” Canada’s relationship with the country. That includes removing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, tariffs that Canada imposed alongside the U.S. in 2024. At best, Carney has a naïve hope that China can be some kind of trustworthy partner, a hallmark of the liberal order that Carney so cherishes, which allows China to run roughshod over global norms and global institutions. At worst, this is Carney allying Canada with a genocidal, expansionist, communist regime to get one over on Donald Trump.

Whatever the case, it is clear that Carney lacks any sort of moral clarity. That has been clear since he has repeatedly promoted Palestinian terrorist propaganda about Israel (again, a key part of Carney’s precious liberal global order). Carney does not care about the global decay of Western values. He is willing to throw Israel to the world’s antisemitic wolves on behalf of terrorist propaganda, and he is willing to treat China as some kind of partner, rather than recognizing China as the biggest threat to global freedom and human rights on the planet.

Carney has a right to be upset with Trump’s oftentimes unnecessarily antagonistic bloviating, but he does not get to turn around and act as a new moral authority on global affairs while trying to normalize the CCP. China has proven that it will say and do anything to undermine global peace and security, but Carney has chosen to “go along to get along” with it all the same.
