The World Health Organization is trying to keep President Donald Trump from withdrawing U.S. support, in the process proving that it has learned nothing from the COVID-19 pandemic, which it allowed to rage throughout the world in 2020.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently gave an interview that served as his sales pitch to the United States to continue funding the organization. According to him, everyone should view this as a matter of “security for everybody,” and he agrees that the U.S. should not have to shoulder the burden of being the main funder of the WHO. But Tedros is still in denial over what happened with his agency and China during the pandemic.

Tedros said in the interview that it is “outright wrong” to accuse the WHO of “being too close to China and helping it cover up the origins of COVID.” He says this because “China is not happy with the position that we have on COVID’s origins,” because the agency hasn’t ruled out the lab leak theory (They haven’t affirmed it, either; they simply haven’t ruled it out). Tedros dismissed anyone criticizing the WHO over its relationship with China as “spreading misinformation and disinformation” and not seeing “what exactly are the facts.”
Here are the facts, which are oh so inconvenient for Tedros as he begs for more American taxpayer dollars: The WHO uncritically parroted Chinese disinformation about COVID-19, downplaying it even as Chinese authorities knew about the virus’s severity. Taiwan tried to warn the WHO about the severity of the situation in China, but was ignored. The WHO to this day continues to block Taiwan from any role in its governing body, the World Health Assembly. The organization’s first investigation into COVID-19’s origins outright dismissed the lab leak theory. The investigation Tedros is bragging about that made China upset was the second one, which was only needed because of the first failure.

If Tedros and the WHO really want us to believe that it has turned the corner on Chinese propaganda, they would make Taiwan a central player in the agency after it tried to warn the world what China was hiding during the pandemic. Instead, the WHO parroted Chinese propaganda, shunned Taiwan’s warnings, plunged the world into a pandemic that it did nothing to prepare for, and then very feebly suggested that the virus may have leaked from the lab. All Tedros has to argue against his agency being beholden to China is that the overly sensitive whiners in the Chinese government got offended over that last point.
Tedros is proving that he has learned nothing and that the WHO is going to make no reforms or changes to prevent it from making the same mistakes that caused the COVID-19 pandemic to be as bad as it was. It deserves no funding from anyone, much less from American taxpayers, whose years of previous funding did nothing but prop up another international institution that serves as a mouthpiece for Chinese propaganda.
