No one cares more about illegal immigrants than California Democrats, who continue to find new privileges to grant them while giving California‘s legal residents the bill.
Earlier this month, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1303, which strips the requirement for people to enter their Social Security numbers to enroll in the California LifeLine program. The LifeLine program subsidizes discounts for phone bills for low-income Californians. By removing the Social Security requirement, Newsom and California Democrats are making it possible for illegal immigrants to enroll in the program and receive discounted phone bills thanks to taxpayer money. This was the stated purpose of the law when it was being debated last year before the 2024 elections.

This is just the continuation of a long trend for California Democrats, who wish to make sure that people who crossed the border illegally get any and every handout that can be afforded to them. In California, that even includes handouts that the state can’t afford. Newsom wanted the state (i.e., the taxpayers) to cover all healthcare costs for illegal immigrants, which was originally given a $6 billion price tag. Because California is not good at math, that price tag quickly jumped to $9.5 billion, and Newsom had to impose some limits on the spending, as California tries to avoid a massive, self-inflicted budget crisis.
Newsom still pushed ahead, though, requiring the state to take a $3.44 billion loan from its general fund (the maximum allowed) just to mitigate costs for one month.
There are more exemptions and privileges that the state grants illegal immigrants as well. That includes offering in-state tuition at universities, even though those illegal immigrants are from other countries and crossed the border illegally. California grants commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants but does not ensure that they actually understand road signs. California Democrats tried to expand another program to ensure that illegal immigrants can be given home loans of up to $150,000. Newsom claims he vetoed it because of California’s financial problems (not that it has stopped him before). Notably, that veto came two months before the 2024 elections.

California also grants special treatment to criminal illegal immigrants, protecting them from deportation at the risk to everyone around them. “Sanctuary state” California prevented the Merced County Sheriff’s Office from turning over David Mora for deportation, after Mora had been arrested for battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and driving under the influence. Days after being released on bail, Mora murdered four people, including his three young children. Mora is just one in a long list of dangerous criminals protected from the consequences of their actions by California law.
California will find more ways to jeopardize legal residents’ safety and taxpayer dollars to aid people who illegally cross the border, because that is what California does. Democrats such as Newsom put those illegal immigrants on a pedestal and make them their top priority, even as Californians (and California) go broke, one taxpayer subsidized phone bill, doctor’s visit, or home loan at a time.
