Democrats are grasping for any ledge in the illegal immigration debate that could give them some support as they fight to keep all illegal immigrants in the country. They have settled on demanding that federal agents show their faces, an argument as silly as the motivation is malicious.
Democrats in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York are trying to pass laws that would force Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to be unmasked or individually identified when operating in their states. It is a fairly ridiculous attempt at a power grab, as state legislators do not have the authority to set a dress code for federal immigration agents.
The chief argument has been that Democrats are doing this so they can hold immigration agents accountable. But these ICE agents already work for an agency that can be held “accountable” by congressional Democrats whenever they wish. These are not masked left-wing rioters who can avoid accountability. The only argument left after this one is that it is too scary to see masked ICE agents conducting arrests, a pathetic argument made worse by the fact that it is coming from Democrats who coddle the aforementioned masked left-wing rioters, including those attacking ICE agents and local law enforcement during deportation raids.

The only purpose that unmasking these agents has (other than making them less “scary”) is to allow them to be harassed for taking part in these deportations. That could be professional harassment from Democratic Congress members and a future Democratic presidential administration, and personal harassment from the burgeoning pool of left-wing lunatics who think violence is an appropriate response to every policy they oppose. Multiple people have been arrested after threatening federal agents and their families, and an antifa cell ambushed ICE agents in Texas in an attempt to murder them.
Democrats have whipped up their increasingly unhinged activists, saying ICE agents are “terrorists,” “Gestapo,” and Nazis. Democratic rhetoric is putting the lives of ICE agents in danger when they are on the clock, and violent left-wingers would dox and harass their families off the clock if Democrats succeed in unmasking them. Democrats are the reason these ICE agents are masked in the first place, and they don’t get to make demands after demonizing these agents and whipping up a violent sect of their activist base.
