Vice President Kamala Harris is struggling in polling among black and Hispanic men. The panic has led the party to ramp the identity politics messaging into overdrive.
Harris is lagging behind President Joe Biden’s 2020 numbers among minority men, raising red flags for her campaign in Pennsylvania and Michigan among black men and in Arizona and Nevada among Hispanic men. Harris’s team is panicking over the lack of enthusiasm for her campaign among black men in Detroit and Philadelphia, and Hispanic men are now evenly split between Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Harris’s campaign is searching for every celebrity it can recruit to stump for Harris, including NBA legend Magic Johnson, who appeared at a campaign event in Flint, Michigan. That list also includes former President Barack Obama, who left his post-presidency celebrity bubble to go to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and tell black men that he thinks they are sexists.
“You’re coming up with all kinds of reasons and excuses, I’ve got a problem with that,” Obama said of black men not supporting Harris. “Part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president.” Obama went on to say that “women in our lives have been getting our backs this entire time” and that black men not supporting Harris were “putting women down.”

This is all toxic identitarianism all the way down. Harris is not a woman in most people’s lives. She is not a stand-in for the mothers, sisters, or daughters of black men or anyone else. You are not putting down the women in your life by declining to vote for one woman in particular. Like all politicians, Harris does not know you or care about you personally. Black men are not obligated to vote for Harris, and it does not make them sexist if they refuse to do so. The same is true for Hispanic men or white men or even the women who are not going to be voting for Harris, either.
Obama knows that Harris does not have an actual pitch to voters based on policy success since the Biden administration she has been a part of is a disaster and since Harris has had to run away from the policies she supported in her 2020 presidential run. He and the Democratic Party are left with shaming minority men for not adhering to the Democratic Party’s ideas of racial political loyalty. It is exactly the kind of toxic division this country has been forced to suffer through since Obama became president.
