Harris is wrong: The government absolutely controls men’s bodies

.

Vice President Kamala Harris made an inaccurate claim on a popular podcast this week.

The Democratic presidential nominee appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast and repeated an emphatic no when asked by host Alex Cooper if any laws exist that give the government control over a man’s body.

We should give Harris credit for effectively admitting that men cannot get pregnant. However, the vice president is wrong. The government controls men’s bodies, which is why the bodily autonomy argument in favor of abortion makes no sense.

Many people cite selective service as an example of governmental control over men’s bodies. Men aged 18 to 25 must register, unlike women. If drafted, those men must fight wars they did not want to fight. Some men have been killed. Our country has living veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War who are products of the draft. We cannot say the same about women.

Meanwhile, the Biden-Harris administration supports various laws that restrict both men’s and women’s bodies.

Remember when national parks had a mask mandate early in the Biden administration due to an executive order from the president? That controlled men’s bodies. The Biden administration also supports vaccine mandates. President Joe Biden attempted to implement a vaccine mandate at private sector businesses with at least 100 employees. Meanwhile, schools often require vaccines, including state colleges and universities.

Our country’s drinking and smoking age remains at 21. Biden voted to entice states to raise the drinking age to 21 in 1984, while Harris did not oppose the $1.4 trillion spending bill in December 2019 that raised the smoking age from 18 to 21. As states ban the sale of flavored tobacco, the Biden-Harris administration wants to ban menthol cigarettes.

Furthermore, most states ban physician-assisted suicide and prostitution, have public decency laws, and require seatbelts in cars and helmets for motorcyclists, while organ sales remain federally illegal. Notice how the Biden administration seeks no change in these laws.

The government is interested in regulating what people can do with their bodies to protect public health and safety. While outdoor mask mandates at sparsely attended national parks were absurd, we do not want people dying from motor vehicle accidents.

Liberal politicians, however, suspend this logic when it comes to killing unborn children. Then politicians act as if they care about bodily autonomy because it is easier to talk about abortion using euphemisms than it is to address what it does: kill developing human beings.

The government should protect the most vulnerable among us, including protecting unborn children from abortions. Just because a baby is inside its mother’s body does not mean it deserves no protection from harm.

Let’s not pretend the government merely restricts what women can do with their bodies when so many other instances also affect men.
