What do the border crisis, Hurricane Helene, and two assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump all have in common? They are failures of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Mayorkas is warning that the Federal Emergency Management Agency does not have enough funding to make it through hurricane season. Mayorkas, ever the incompetent political tool that he is for Democrats, blames climate change. In reality, he has burned through $1.4 billion in FEMA funds for illegal immigrants.
In other words, Mayorkas has created a crisis with FEMA, which he oversees, to cover up the border crisis that he created by refusing to enforce immigration laws. We have seen the consequences of Mayorkas’s border inaction as unprecedented numbers of illegal immigrants have crossed the border and been released into the country, overwhelming small towns and major U.S. cities alike. To clean up the mess he made, Mayorkas is now putting people at risk from future hurricanes that FEMA won’t be able to respond to without additional funding to replace the funds he wasted.
As if it couldn’t be any worse, Mayorkas also oversees the Secret Service, whose institutional failures led to Trump being shot onstage at a rally in Pennsylvania and a spectator being killed. A second would-be assassin tried to kill the former president shortly after at a golf course in Florida. Trump also had to cancel a rally because Mayorkas’s Secret Service couldn’t promise it would be able to protect him due to a shortage of agents.
During Mayorkas’s Homeland Security tenure, there was a mass exodus of 1,400 agents in fiscal 2022 and 2023, the largest decrease in at least 20 years — this despite the fact that the agency knew 2024 would be a strenuous year given the presidential campaigns. Mayorkas’s initial border crisis also played a part here, as in 2021, he pushed for Secret Service agents to volunteer for border security jobs, stretching the agency thin and pushing for agents who already felt overworked to take on even more hours.

Mayorkas has been at the helm for all of these failures, and they all stem from the border crisis that he created and then denied existed for years. Along with the attempted political assassinations, a lack of preparedness for hurricanes, and cities across the country being overwhelmed by illegal immigrants, the illegal immigration permitted by Mayorkas has allowed murderers, gang members, and terrorists to flow into the country through the southern border.
In every capacity of his job, Mayorkas has failed at protecting the homeland. His tenure has been one crisis, disaster, and failure after another. Every day that Mayorkas remains in charge makes the country less stable and less safe.
