In a classic case of organizational leadership ignoring the interests of its membership for political reasons, leaders of the Daughters of the American Revolution are attempting to quash an attempt by their members to ensure biological males cannot join the organization.
According to a report from Daily Wire personality Michael Knowles, DAR leaders have circulated a document claiming that allowing biological males who identify as women to join the organization was a process that happened “organically,” so long as they had changed their birth certificates to say that they were women.
But there was nothing organic about the process. The organization’s leaders made the policy change by executive fiat through a basic reinterpretation of the existing bylaws.
But the organization’s members fought back. Earlier this year, a group of members proposed an amendment to the organization’s bylaws that would condition membership on the basis of biological sex, regardless of whether the prospective member had changed his birth certificate to indicate he is a female.
However, the amendment was rejected by a gatekeeping board that determines which bylaw amendments are permitted to receive a vote from members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The board claimed that the amendment was “not in the best interests of the society” and was not “suitable subject matter for inclusion in the bylaws.”

Now, there is another organization, the Sons of the American Revolution for a reason. Men can join that one, and women can join the DAR. But rather than defend the policy of permitting men to join the organization, DAR leaders have told members to stuff it and accept their dictatorial edicts.
At this point, the organization’s members who oppose their national leaders’ undemocratic turn have only one recourse: continue to propose amendments to the bylaws in the hopes that, eventually, the leadership will allow a vote. After all, if the process of allowing transgender members truly happened “organically,” the full membership would be supportive and the leadership vindicated. But the leaders of the Daughters of the American Revolution have nothing but contempt for their members’ views on the matter.
