Baltimore blames carjackings on cars, not criminals

Who is responsible for public safety and protecting people from having their cars stolen? You might think it would be local governments, who are responsible for enforcing laws and ensuring that criminals go to jail. But no — according to the city of Baltimore, the real blame for rampant criminal carjackings lies at the feet of the car manufacturers themselves.

The city of Baltimore filed a federal lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai, alleging that the companies created a public nuisance by making cars that can be stolen easily.

“Hyundai and Kia’s decision to put cost savings and profits over public safety has had significant consequences for Baltimore and its residents, as it has in other cities,” the city claims.

That’s right. The blame for rampant carjackings does not fall on the city of Baltimore, which saw larcenies increase every month in 2022 and solved them at a dramatically lower rate (2.7%) than the national average (15%). The blame does not lie on the city for coddling criminals, or on the criminals themselves for being criminals. The blame doesn’t even fall on TikTok, the Chinese spyware app that promotes destructive trends to American users, including stealing Kia and Hyundai cars.

No, the blame for preventing criminals from stealing cars lies on the car companies themselves. If Kia and Hyundai didn’t want their cars to be stolen, they shouldn’t be wearing such short skirts, it seems.

A normal, functioning city would see a surge in carjackings and crack down on the criminal act itself, throwing the book at carjackers and other career criminals that are emboldened by soft-on-crime policies. But Baltimore is not a functioning city. City leaders did not even care about its absurdly high homicide rate under previous district attorney Marilyn Mosby. Why would they care enough about carjackings to do anything about it, other than scapegoat car manufacturers themselves?

Democrats have run Baltimore for 56 years. In that time, the city has become known for violence, homicides, and now carjackings. They refuse to address crime because it would be an admission that they have allowed their city to become a crime-ridden dystopia akin to what is depicted in “The Wire.” And so the blame must be put on those evil car companies for making their cars too tempting for the criminals whom Baltimore is unable or unwilling to lock up.
