Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is a dominant player on the basketball court. He is one of the best players in the league and was just named the 2022-2023 Most Valuable Player of the NBA.

Yet, as great as he is on the hardwood, he appears to lack common sense off it. Embiid was seen wearing Balenciaga apparel, the sports clothing company mired in controversy after marketing campaigns alluding to child pornography and the sexualization of young children.

As the Washington Examiner‘s Madeline Fry Schultz reported last November, the French sporting apparel company released a disturbing ad that featured children holding teddy bears wearing BDSM and bondage attire and another “office” themed promotion that had “hidden among a stack of papers in photos for the spring campaign was the Supreme Court’s United States v. Williams opinion, which upheld a federal law prohibiting child pornography in advertising even if the content doesn’t specifically constitute ‘child pornography.'”

The disturbing photos led to a worldwide backlash against the company. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, Bella Hadid, and Kylie Jenner were heavily criticized as they declined to comment or disassociate themselves from the company. Unless the hyper-sexualization of young kids and child pornography are sins that are easily overlooked, Joel Embiid, or any public relations representative on the Philadelphia 76ers, should have advised him not to wear anything from the brand.

The recent trend of the hyper-sexualization of the country’s youth does not receive the attention it deserves. It warrants the attention of every person living in the nation today.

In an era that is quick to “cancel” people based on their decisions or boycott companies because of their actions and statements, it is disconcerting that a company with a disgusting marketing campaign that, at the bare minimum, promoted the perverse sexualization of children, seemingly go unscathed.

It is possible that Embiid was either unaware of the controversy or completely forgot about it. However, the fact that he was seen on the sideline wearing Balenciaga should raise red flags to everyone on how easily the controversy was swept under the rug. Moreover, it’s indicative of the inexplicable tolerance of the “premature sexualization” of the nation’s youth plaguing the country today.
