For all the constant media fretting about the extremism on the Right, the clear trend in America is a cultural Left that keeps tacking farther and farther to the Left.
The latest Pew polls on abortion confirm this. Check out these charts: In 2007, less than two-thirds of Democrats said that abortions should be legal in all or most cases. Now, 5 in 6 Democrats say that.

Republicans, meanwhile, have been consistent over the last 16 years: about 2 in 5 say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.
This reflects what is happening in the culture war more broadly. Consider gender: Out of nowhere, the cultural Left has declared that you are a bigot if you object to biological men who identify as women beating the crap out of women. Cultural conservatives, meanwhile, believe that a woman is a woman, which is what conservatives have always believed.
Other interesting details from this poll: Hispanics are by far the most likely ethnic or racial group to take the 100% pro-life position: 15% say abortion should be illegal in all cases, compared to 9% of blacks and whites.
Only 38% of Catholics say that abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, which means that a clear majority of Catholics reject Catholic teaching on the issue. The Church is 100% clear that abortion is an evil that must not be legally tolerated.
