House Republicans sought to bring sanity and fiscal responsibility to the nation this week, passing the Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023. The legislation, also known as the debt limit bill, is much needed to grind down the wayward and reckless government spending that has plagued the country over the last several years. Under the new debt limit proposal, spending would be cut gradually by approximately 14% over the next 10 years. The proposal squeaked by with a 217-215 vote.
Republicans were mainly against raising the debt ceiling but agreed to do so. Fiscal hawks might not be too pleased with the bill since House GOP members compromised with Democrats and decided to raise the debt ceiling. However, judging by the votes along party lines, one would never know it was an actual compromise. Unfortunately, that stubbornness is indicative of the toxic brand of politics Democrats have become known for.
SCHUMER’S ZOMBIE ERA VOTE IS JUST A STUNT
As the Washington Examiner reported, the Congressional Budget Office predicted the nation’s debt will increase to approximately 120% of the annual gross domestic product by 2033. The GOP bill limited federal discretionary spending to $1.47 trillion for the next fiscal year. It also restricts discretionary spending to max out at fiscal 2022 levels. Overall, the spending cuts associated with the bill will reduce the federal deficit by $4.8 trillion in the next 10 years.
Biden and his political misinformation accomplices in Congress and the media have falsely claimed that Republicans wanted to cut Social Security and Medicare to decrease government spending. However, no such eliminations are included in this bill. It was more unsubstantiated propaganda by the Left.
FreedomWorks, an advocacy group that prioritizes smaller government, lower taxes, and free markets, among other things, championed the now-passed House bill.
“Republicans are delivering on their mandate to stop out-of-control spending by the federal government,” Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, said in a statement. “For partisan purposes, President Biden and Senate Democrats have been stonewalling efforts that would help avoid a default on our nation’s debt, and now it’s time for them to come to the negotiating table. With our national debt nearing $32 trillion, now is the time for common sense to govern and for President Biden and Congress to reach a compromise on this debt ceiling debate.”

Additionally, the bill is the start of what surely will be an ugly, ever-changing process in future years as the government must get control of its fiscal duties. It is a daunting task given the carelessness with which Democrats spend taxpayer money. As such, the Republicans had to be the responsible “adults in the room” and do what was necessary. Without any action, the nation is at unsustainable spending levels that threaten the government’s future stability.
The House GOP bill is a step in the right direction. However, more cuts will probably be needed in the future. All of the unnecessary programs that accomplish nothing but fund an already too-bloated bureaucracy should be the next to go. Hopefully, the House GOP can audit the government over the next two years and try to undo the country’s fiscal mess.
