Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) thinks Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is full of “weakness masquerading as strength.” In reality, Newsom exposes that he is trying to hide his own jealousy toward DeSantis’s success as strength.

Newsom said DeSantis should “wait a few years” to run for president and that he would just get “rolled by Trump.” “Trump’s just gonna roll him, thumped,” Newsom said. “Honestly, if I were offering him political advice, I would tell him to pack up and wait a few years. And actually do some of the hard work, which actually includes governing not just identity and cultural war.” He added that DeSantis should “come back as a more seasoned and capable leader with a little humility. Which, by the way, he could use a little of.”

NEWSOM’S RED STATE TOUR RUNNING INTO CRITICISM FROM LOCAL DEMOCRATS

Yes, Gavin Newsom thinks someone else could use a little humility. How’s that for self-awareness?

Newsom, of course, is jealous of DeSantis’s position. DeSantis is polling well against former President Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential primary even though he hasn’t declared yet. Newsom, meanwhile, is being squeezed out of a possible White House run in 2024 by President Joe Biden, the 80-year-old man who is planning on running for reelection.

While Newsom will have to wait until 2028, when he will have already been out of office for two years and surpassed by other Democratic stars, DeSantis has the opportunity to run while he has momentum. You could hardly blame Newsom for being a little envious.

But it isn’t just DeSantis’s clearer path to the presidency that has Newsom seeing red. Newsom said DeSantis should focus on Florida’s high cost of living, a clear projection given that California has the third highest cost of living in the country. That cost of living has driven half a million people to flee the state in the last two years under Newsom. Florida, meanwhile, is the fastest-growing state in the country under DeSantis.

Even electorally, Newsom has much to be jealous about. His 2022 reelection campaign saw him win California by 18.4 points. Florida was considered a swing state as recently as the 2020 election, yet DeSantis won his 2022 reelection campaign by 19.4 points. DeSantis won in a nominal swing state by a larger margin against a former governor than Newsom won in a solid blue state against a little-known state senator.

You can see how that kind of thing would eat at the pride of someone as self-important as Newsom.

While DeSantis is running a successful, growing state and perfectly positioned to run for president in 2024, Newsom is presiding over the decay of California and desperately chasing clout off of DeSantis’s name. That is why he decided to visit Florida in a pathetic attempt to antagonize DeSantis and why he issued a debate challenge to DeSantis last year. Newsom is being forced to sit on the sidelines by his party while DeSantis is in a perfect position to become president. It’s clear who the “weak” one in this one-sided feud is.
