Leftists were never sincere about their rage over those ‘lock her up’ chants

During the 2016 election cycle, one of the main sources of liberal rage was the possibility that Donald Trump would not accept the results of the 2016 election. Of course, most of those most prone to rage never accepted the 2016 result, precisely because Trump won. Nor did his opponent, Hillary Clinton, who instead spent her twilight years spreading conspiracy theories about a stolen election. She might even still be out there somewhere, alive — I’m not sure because I haven’t checked up on her Wikipedia entry lately.

But before any of that had happened, the rage focused upon Trump supporters’ love of the old “Lock her up!” chant — a call to have Trump’s election opponent arrested.

This was, we were told, horrible — anathema to the proper functioning of the republic. And even many conservatives (myself included) were concerned when Trump himself threatened Clinton during an Oct. 9, 2016, presidential debate:

“And I’ll tell you what. I didn’t think I’d say this, but I’m going to say it, and I hate to say it. But if I win, I am going to instruct my Attorney General to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation, because there has never been so many lies, so much deception. There has never been anything like it, and we’re going to have a special prosecutor.”

This was, of course, inappropriate. In free societies, the election winner does not lock up the loser. That’s the stuff of Fidel Castro and other banana republics. Frankly, it’s beneath the dignity of a presidential candidate to threaten his opponent with jail in the event that he wins. Even Hillary Clinton, the most hate-able and insincere person ever to run for president.

Six and a half years on, Donald Trump is on the verge of being arrested on what is obviously a pretext. The “crime” in question — the paying of hush money over an affair that may or may not have happened — is just a pretext for arresting the 2020 election loser. This seems to be the entire basis for Manhattan DA Alvin “the criminal’s best friend” Bragg’s impending indictment and arrest of Trump.

But absent some vast trove of inculpatory evidence that no one knows about showing that this was more than a hush-money payment, this is a dud. There is nothing illegal about paying hush money over an affair — even if it is deeply sordid and a scathing indictment of Trump’s personal character, it is still not a crime.

Now, with Trump’s indictment on trumped-up charges imminent, it is quite clear that when the shoe is on the other foot, the leftists are very happy to chant, “Lock him up.”

And shame on them, for all the same reasons Trump’s supporters deserved to be shamed in 2016. I do not agree that this will cause Trump to win in a landslide, as Elon Musk put it. But I’d just say this: it’s hard to make Donald Trump look sympathetic. Congratulations to Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg for finding a way to do it.

Perhaps this is their way of interfering in the Republican primary, to get Trump re-nominated because they think they can beat him. Or maybe they’re just dumber than anyone thought. Either way, they were never sincere in their anger about “Lock her up.” They were just throwing their tantrums over that for show. As with everything else they say.
