The Biden administration is once again facing questions about border security — this time surrounding an MS-13 gang member who was released from federal custody and went on to kill a woman in Maryland.

In March 2022, an MS-13 gang member was taken into custody by Border Patrol after being apprehended in Rio Grande City, Texas. He was then turned over to the Health and Human Services Department. He claimed that a woman in Maryland was his aunt. He moved there and lived in a rented room in a three-bedroom mobile home where Kayla Hamilton lived with her boyfriend. He ended up raping Hamilton and strangling her to death.

Police in Aberdeen, Maryland, only learned earlier this year that the suspect was a member of MS-13. U.S. Customs and Border Protection claims to use several methods of screening for illegal immigrants, including biometric information, background checks, and agent interviews, yet it completely slipped by that this man was part of the ruthless gang whose motto is “Kill, Rape, Control.”

Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Tom McClintock (R-CA) are now demanding answers from HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. They have presented a series of questions about the suspect’s time in federal custody, including whether HHS even bothered to check whether the woman he identified as his aunt was, in fact, his aunt. The answers to these questions will only add further failures to the Biden administration’s initial failure of letting an MS-13 gang member cross the border and make his way all the way to Maryland.

How many other violent gang members are being shepherded into and settled in the United States by the Biden administration? We know that Border Patrol arrested 312 MS-13 members in fiscal 2022. But we do not know how many slipped through the cracks — like the one that managed to make it to Maryland. There were 2.3 million illegal immigrants apprehended in that same time period. With President Joe Biden’s catch-and-release policies on the border, and an HHS secretary known to cut corners and do sloppy work, it is not reasonable to think that DHS and HHS can vet every single one.

Mayorkas and Becerra have a lot to answer for. Neither belongs anywhere near such a sensitive matter as border security. But really, this all falls directly on Biden. These two are only carrying out Biden’s nonenforcement border policy, and it is Biden who has sought to make it easier for illegal immigrants to rush across the border and be released into the country. Biden has made it easier for MS-13 animals to cross the border and nearly impossible to identify which illegal immigrants are threats. The results are tragic but unsurprising.
