With Lori Lightfoot on her way out in Chicago, the position of worst mayor in America will soon be up for grabs. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell may be at the top of the list.
Then again, she may not be there for long.
Lightfoot’s failures on crime are rivaled by Cantrell’s. New Orleans saw 277 homicides in 2022, the most in a single year since 1996. In January, homicides were already up 14% compared to January 2022. There have already been 108 non-fatal shooting victims through the first two months of the year, and the 40 homicides through Feb. 27 match the same pace as last year’s record numbers.

Cantrell is also mired in scandals. It is alleged that she had an affair with a member of her security detail. She has been accused of using her city-owned apartment for personal benefit. She also cost the city tens of thousands of dollars in excessive first-class flights, for which she initially refused to reimburse the city. This, along with allowing crime to spiral out of control, has left Cantrell’s net approval rating 31 points underwater.
In fact, a recall campaign has been launched against her, with organizers claiming they have already hit the threshold of nearly 50,000 signatures. So her reign as America’s worst mayor may come to an end before it even begins.
The common thread here, of course, is decades of Democratic decay. Chicago’s last Republican mayor left office in 1931. New Orleans hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1872. The Democratic monopoly on major American cities leads them to take city residents for granted, and the disastrous results are both predictable and uniform across the country.

After all, what are the voters going to do? Replace a failing Democrat with another soon-to-fail Democrat?
In Chicago, they are doing just that. One of the two candidates in the runoff to replace Lightfoot supports defunding the police, meaning Chicago could be back at the top of the worst mayor list very soon. In New Orleans, Cantrell would also be replaced by another Democrat who may or may not care about crime and may or may not be corrupt. In cities such as New Orleans and Chicago, voters get a Democrat every time they spin the wheel, and then they act surprised when nothing ever changes.
