Gay GOP group lights its credibility on fire with bizarre move

Something very strange is going on with the Log Cabin Republicans. The group of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Republicans has long advocated tolerance and inclusion within the GOP. But it’s now teaming up with a self-described “homophobic” troll.
On Wednesday, LCR unveiled its latest group of ambassadors for “Outspoken,” a spin-off influencer brand. Among the new LGBT Republican influencers are some interesting and respectable folks, such as lesbian YouTuber Arielle Scarcella and transgender commentator Buck Angel. But the group also hired social media troll Isabella Riley Moody as one of its new influencers.

This is bizarre for several reasons, chief among them the fact that Moody is not lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. But, more importantly, she’s actively anti-gay and openly works against gay acceptance on the Right.
“Our society literally puts f****** on a pedestal and worships them like they’re god,” Moody said in a recent video commentary. “It’s such BS to say we are a homophobic society. I wish we were a homophobic society — and that’s the goddamn truth.”
That’s right: The new ambassador for gay Republicans is a straight woman who unabashedly calls gay people “f******” and says she wishes we lived in a more homophobic society. To say the very least, this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
But Moody is leaning into the inconsistency, tweeting that she is proud to be the “token straight homophobic b**** ambassador” among Outspoken’s group.
If you’re confused, rest assured that everyone else is, too. I reached out to both Moody and Log Cabin Republicans President Charles Moran requesting clarification and did not receive a response.
The only conceivable explanation I can come up with is that they’re doing this for attention. Frankly, the influence of Log Cabin Republicans on GOP politics has waned significantly in recent years. But the modest level of attention this stunt will have brought to its influencer program is surely not worth the destruction of whatever credibility Log Cabin had left.
For a pro-gay nonprofit organization to align with, promote, and (presumably) pay an openly homophobic influencer is to betray its mission and, frankly, its donors. As a result, it’s not going to be taken seriously again any time soon. And that’s a serious shame.
Many of us within the gay and transgender communities are not Democrats or liberals. Like any demographic, we are composed of people with a wide range of personal beliefs and values. Yet the current orthodoxy in the establishment “LGBTQ community” regards diversity of thought with sharp hostility. That’s something anyone who believes in individualism ought to push back on — and we need groups such as LCR to push back from within. But their self-immolation means that vital pushback won’t happen, or at least, won’t be viewed with any credibility.
I still don’t fully understand what’s going on over at Log Cabin Republicans. But it’s sad to watch an important institution light its credibility on fire in public simply for five seconds of online attention.
