Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was honored last week at the historic Union League of Philadelphia, receiving the organization’s gold medal of honor, an award first given to President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The distinction is “conferred on men who were regarded as deserving well of their country.” Other previous recipients include former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-GA), former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), and Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

But the backlash from selecting DeSantis has overshadowed the award itself. Many of Philadelphia’s Democrats — particularly black Democrats — lamented the decision and arranged protests over the Union League choosing DeSantis. The reason? Their own false accusations of racism, of course. Black people are being murdered at record-breaking rates in the city, violent crime is wreaking havoc throughout black communities, and the city’s black Democrats care only about a private organization giving an award to one of the nation’s most successful governors, who just happens to be a leading Republican in the 2024 presidential race. Who could have possibly foreseen that these Democrats would launch demonstrations and make baseless claims of racism?

It’s time to call out the bias and bigotry of Philadelphia’s black Democrats. They play this race card any time there is a Republican in Philadelphia. Going back to George W. Bush and the Republican National Convention in 2000 to Ron DeSantis in 2023, the playbook is the same. Make the city’s black residents think they are oppressed and categorize a nationally prominent Republican as the racist oppressor.

In typical fashion, they claimed DeSantis was racist and a threat to black people. Yet when it comes to protecting black people or trying to do something to eradicate actual threats plaguing black people in Philadelphia, these political charlatans have not done a thing in their entire lives. For example, they have taken more action to protest DeSantis getting a single medal than they have done to object to or reverse Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s policy of putting criminals on the streets to terrorize black communities instead of behind bars.

Consider just some of the ridiculous actions taken because DeSantis received the award.

State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D) represents parts of Philadelphia. He stood outside the Union League last week to protest DeSantis. “Why are you promoting this individual who, in their philosophy, sees so many people, black and brown folks, LGBTQ+ folks, as secondhand citizens?” Hughes asked last week.

Hughes’s enthusiasm for activism has been eerily missing throughout the city’s crime surge. In fact, not only has he done little, if anything, to help curb the violence, but he publicly supported Krasner, the one man most responsible for causing it. His “anger” is a farce, predicated only on DeSantis being a Republican and a white male.

Another civic leader, the Rev. Alyn E. Waller of Philadelphia’s Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, cited DeSantis’s nixing a proposed Advanced Placement course on African American history. DeSantis, who supports the teaching of black history, canceled the course due to its promotion of radical left-wing ideology and indoctrination, but never mind the details.

“This is a disgrace,” Waller said in a Facebook post, according to WPVI. “It is wrong. It is a smack in the face of the people of this city. How are you going to honor someone in a city that is 44% African American, and he has determined that an AP course on African American history has no educational value? That is not acceptable.”

The Philadelphia City Council introduced a resolution condemning the Union League’s decision, claiming that DeSantis’s term as governor has been marked by “cruelty, division, censorship, political gamesmanship, and the undermining of our democratic system.” Philadelphia’s NAACP also protested DeSantis receiving the award.

Philadelphia has had over 1,500 murders in the last three years. Congresswomen are being carjacked in the city, Philadelphia Eagles football players are having their cars stolen, and this is what the City Council is spending its time on. They will do literally anything to avoid having to make the city a better place to live.

Philadelphia’s ruling-class Democrats don’t care about black lives. They only care about appearing to be concerned for them. This is why they participate in meaningless demonstrations and protests that are the hallmark of left-wing Democratic political theater. They don’t want to do the legitimate work needed to implement meaningful change to help the city’s black residents because they don’t care.
