Kamala Harris keeps demanding gun control, without offering actual solutions

Vice President Kamala Harris is tired of everybody not taking action on gun control. According to Harris, what we must do is take action, and we do that by… taking action.

Harris offered typically empty comments about gun control when visiting a memorial in Monterey Park, California. As Democrats often do when talking about gun control, Harris said that we just must do something, but what exactly that “something” is went unmentioned. “Tragically we keep saying the same things,” Harris said. “Congress must act. Should they? Yes. Can they? Yes.”

Harris continued: “Will they do something? That is where we must all speak up and speak to our elected representatives … in the interest of the safety, the security, and the well-being of people like those whose lives were ended here and people around our country. They can.”

Do you feel sufficiently motivated? Do you feel like calling your congressman and demanding that he “do something?” And yet Harris, like the dozens of Democrats before her and the countless that will come after her, offered no actual solutions.

What federal gun legislation would have prevented this shooting? Harris doesn’t know, and neither does anyone else. We have yet to learn any details about how the Monterey Park shooter acquired his firearm. The gun he used is already illegal to buy or sell in California, which has the strictest gun control laws in the country. Police described it as “a very uncommon weapon.”

What we do know is that the few times Democrats actually offer gun control proposals, they accomplish little. The Washington Post has twice examined the weapons acquired and used by mass shooters and determined that mainstream gun control proposals, from “assault weapons bans” to universal background checks do nothing to prevent those shootings. The most common trends are that mass shooters have various red flags (California already has a red-flag law in place) and that existing gun control laws fail, whether from lack of vigorous enforcement or from “administrative errors.”

Harris and other Democrats read off the same list of stale talking points every time there is a high-profile shooting, regardless of the circumstances that led to it. If they want a real gun control debate, they should tailor their proposals to the shootings they use to promote them.

Or perhaps we could agree to start throwing the book at gun criminals and enforcing existing gun laws first, before coming up with new ones.
