Democratic state Sen. Wiley Nickel secured the win for North Carolina’s sole swing district Tuesday, defeating MAGA candidate Bo Hines to represent the 13th District in the House.

Nickel centered his platform on abortion access, affordable housing, and Medicare. Both candidates appeared to stick to the party line on the issues, with Hines accusing Nickel of being soft on crime due to his background as a defense attorney. Nickel has also said that he would vote to codify the protections outlined in Roe v. Wade, which would solidify a woman’s access to abortion.

Nickel served two terms in the state Senate before crossing onto the national stage and is not a newcomer to the world of politics. Nickel previously worked as a member of then-Vice President Al Gore’s national advance staff and was a member of former President Barack Obama’s campaign staff before becoming a state senator. The district Nickel now represents consists of the southern border of Raleigh and farms in the west, a collection of urban, suburban, and rural communities.
