Midterm results: Democrat Greg Landsman beats Steve Chabot in Ohio House race

Cincinnati City Councilman Greg Landsman managed to best Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH) on Tuesday night to win the election for Ohio’s 1st District in a big Democratic pick-up.
Chabot’s loss to Landsman marks the first time since 2008 that he has lost reelection in the district.

The race was extremely close leading up to Tuesday night, with Landsman leading the race at 49% while Chabot trailed at 46%, according to an Impact Research poll.
Before running against Chabot, Landsman had worked as a public school teacher before serving as a councilman for Cincinnati, which he has served for five years. Unopposed in the Democratic primary, he then set his sights on taking on Chabot, according to Business Insider.
Ahead of Tuesday’s election, Chabot had joined many Republicans in opposing the impeachment of former President Donald Trump. In July, he joined a minority of Republicans in the House to vote for the CHIPS Act, which President Joe Biden signed a month later.
In the 1990s, Chabot was one of 13 House Republicans appointed to serve in the impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton.

Chabot campaigned on revitalizing the economy, increasing security, and reining in government spending, while Landsman campaigned with the promise of expanding voter rights and increasing access to education. Both candidates campaigned with the promise of safety from gun violence, with Chabot focusing on school safety in particular, according to their campaign websites.
