Midterm results: Harriet Hageman wins Wyoming House race to replace Liz Cheney

Harriet Hageman won the midterm race for Wyoming’s lone House seat, replacing Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who was ousted from her seat during the primaries after becoming a top target among the Republican Party for her staunch opposition to former President Donald Trump.
Hageman first made headlines after Trump endorsed the Republican candidate in the GOP primary against Cheney after the incumbent voted to impeach the former president in 2021, making her one of just 10 House Republicans to do so.
Cheney also became a high-profile target of Trump after she was appointed as vice chairwoman of the Jan. 6 committee and was one of just two Republicans on the panel investigating the Capitol riot.
Hageman, a onetime ally and informal adviser to Cheney, bested the Wyoming Republican in the primaries, paving the way for her to be elevated to the House. Trump praised Hageman for her stances on crime and the southern border, touting her as a strong candidate for Congress.

A Wyoming native, Hageman has a background as an attorney after receiving her bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Wyoming. Hageman later ran for public office for the first time when she launched an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2018, following in the footsteps of her father, Jim Hageman, who was a state representative for more than 20 years.
Hageman then decided to run against Cheney in the 2021 midterm elections, noting the incumbent “betrayed Wyoming, betrayed the country, and she betrayed me.”
