In a tearful and heartfelt message, actor Brendan Fraser accepted his award for best actor at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday in Los Angeles.
Fraser returned to acting prominence with his award-winning role in The Whale, which saw him play the role of a 600-pound English teacher who becomes housebound and tries to repair his relationship with his daughter.

He said the film is about “finding the light in a dark place” and encouraged others who are suffering emotionally.
“If you [are] like a guy like Charlie, who I played in this movie, in any way, struggle with obesity, or you just feel like you’re in a dark sea, I want you to know that if you, too, can have the strength to just get to your feet and go to the light, good things will happen,” Fraser said.
Fraser thanked Darren Aronofsky, The Whale’s director, for helping him find where he “needed to be.”
“I was in the wilderness, and I probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs, but you’ve found me,” Fraser said. “And like all the best directors, you merely just showed me where to go to get to where I needed to be.”
Fraser previously expressed disappointment and frustration with the response given to him by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association regarding sexual assault accusations against the organization’s former president and member Philip Berk.
“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” Fraser told GQ magazine in November.
As a result, Fraser did not attend last week’s Golden Globes, which is put on by the HFPA.

On Sunday at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Fraser said the making of The Whale meant “more than I know how to say with words.”
“It was an act of faith,” Fraser said. “We all approached this piece as if it were the first and last time we would ever have a chance to do this kind of work ever again each day, and I think that this movie can help do a lot of good.”
