Midterm results: Jen Kiggans wins Virginia’s competitive 2nd District

Republican Jen Kiggans emerged from a tight House race for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, unseating Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA) in one of the most competitive midterm elections this cycle.

Kiggans’ victory grants a crucial win to Republicans, winning back a House seat that Luria flipped blue in 2018 amid Democrats’ blue wave during that year’s midterm elections.

MIDTERMS: LIVE UPDATES

The Republican candidate bested incumbent Luria after polls showed a statistical tie just two weeks before Election Day. Election forecasters ranked the race as a toss-up for months, prompting Republicans and Democrats to pour their resources into the race as both parties sought to seize control of the House for the next two years.

The tight polling cemented the race as one of the most competitive elections this midterm cycle, which in turn made it one of the most expensive in Virginia this year. More than $12 million was spent on ads in the race by the two candidates and political action committees, according to Open Secrets

The race was particularly competitive after redistricting gave Republicans a 1-point advantage in the district.
